PURPOSE: 

The purpose of the Senior Accountant position is to record, reconcile, report, and analyze Ventures’ financial transactions and lending functions. In addition, this position will assist the Finance department with ensuring the organization meets legal and regulatory requirements. This position reports to the Senior Director of Finance and has no direct reports.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Accounts Receivable: Record receivables such as donations, grants, contracts, and pledges in the accounting system in a timely and accurate manner; communicate with team members to ensure adequate cash flow; track outstanding receivables, follow-up as necessary, and report monthly.

  • Accounts Payable: Review check requests, record invoices in the accounting system, obtain proper payment authorization, and issue payments for invoices and employee reimbursements in an accurate and timely manner. Track outstanding checks monthly. Enter deferrals, accruals, and reclassifications as needed.

  • Payroll: Serve as the backup for semi-monthly payroll processing. This includes processing the payroll run, making entries for associated expenses and benefits payables, and reconciling payroll accounts for leadership review.

  • Annual Audit: Adhere to strict audit requirements, prepare records for auditors, and support internal spot checks by Finance Committee.

  • Banking: Maintain online payment systems as well as finance software direct deposit for retail vendors, contractors, grant awardees, and other payees.

  • Contract Administration: Support the financial reporting requirements tied to government grant contracts by tracking capital, lease, and grant projects.

  • Internal Controls: Support the development and practice of strong internal controls and review discrepancies with the Senior Director of Finance.

  • Reconciliation: Reconcile assigned accounts regularly in accordance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP)and report discrepancies.

  • Retail: Track and send monthly retail consignment payments to retail vendors. Pull daily sales reports and enter daily sales in finance software, coordinate with retail team on cash deposits, reconcile retail account, and investigate differences.

  • Loan and Capital Program Documentation: Work with the Senior Director of Finance about loan pipeline and approvals, enter new loans in accounting system. Share monthly loan portfolio balance and transactions and reconcile. Prepare loan roll-forwards on a semi-annual basis and for auditors.

  • Payment Processing: Process loan transactions including loan disbursements, management of monthly loan payment transactions, loan restructuring/re-issuing, accrued interest tracking, and final loan payments. Communicate payment issues. Process and record loan payments to funders.

  • External Reporting (back-up): Update Small Business Administration’s web system (MPERS) for loan closings and monthly reporting, submit monthly report to credit bureaus, coordinate quarterly reporting to SBA, interest payments for loan funding.

  • Recordkeeping: Proactively maintain highly organized online filing system for financial records.

  • Other Responsibilities: Order and maintain organizational business licenses, registrations, and certificates; assist team as needed with budget and financial report preparations; ensure all W9s are collected. Pull financial reports for management as needed and provide monthly reports by department. Perform ad hoc duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Work Experience:


  • 5+ years of similar accounting experience or equivalent combination of education, training, and experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or related field preferred

  • Strong understanding of GAAP, FASB, and nonprofit accounting

Technical Skills


  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, particularly Excel, and accounting software


  • Ability to learn and productively use new software applications, as well as navigate vendor and government systems as necessary

WORK ENVIRONMENT & PHYSICAL DEMANDS

This position operates in a hybrid office environment with in-person work required Monday–Thursday; remote work on Fridays.
Must be able to sit at a computer for extended periods.
Occasionally may lift up to 15 pounds.
May require occasional travel to events or external meetings.

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS


  • Starting Salary Range: $80,000-$85,000 per year 

  • Subsidized Medical insurance – 90% of premiums paid for by Ventures, 50% of premiums for partners and dependents
